These capabilities apply to virtual networks (such as private virtual networking and using virtual machines), to physical networks, and to networks that house com- puters used in clustering. Microsoft calls this making the NIC a “point of automation” for software used to manage network functions including network services setup, IP address management, network monitoring, assessing network topology, and network troubleshooting. Network Controller Role New to Windows Server 2016, the Network Controller role turns a NIC in the server into a central device that can mine the network for information to be used by one or more network management applications. ![]() In previous versions of Windows Server-since Windows Server 2008 R2-you had to obtain Multipoint Services as a separate product at extra cost.
